BlueMeme Group Reduces Development Time by 70% Using Low-code and Agile Methodologies for Project at University of the Ryukyus

Contribute to solving local issues through in-house development using “AGILE-DX”

BlueMeme Inc. and its wholly-owned subsidiary OpenModels Inc. provided “AGILE-DX” to address social issues identified by the University of the Ryukyus (Nakagami, Okinawa Prefecture). This enabled the university to internalize application development and significantly reduce development time.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of children who are isolated from their families, schools, and communities due to economic reasons. This is a major factor in truancy and hinders social participation. In Okinawa Prefecture, per capita income is particularly low, with the percentage of households raising children in poverty as high as 23.2%*.

To solve these issues, local governments, NPOs, and community residents are promoting the establishment of facilities for these children, such as “Kodomo Shokudo”**, learning support centers, and playgrounds. However, solving these issues is difficult due to factors such as the economic circumstances of the families involved. Furthermore, there are often challenges in matching children in need with supporters, and many activities are discontinued due to a lack of continuous donations from companies that could fund these activities.

Against this background, the Miyata Laboratory, led by Assistant Professor Miyata Ryota from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Ryukyus, formed a project team in collaboration with Professor Motomura Makoto from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the same university. Together with “Okinawa Children’s Mirai Lunch Support” in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, the team developed “UmuYui” an application that uses AI to distribute food donations from corporations to children’s homes more efficiently.

BlueMeme and OpenModels (hereafter referred to as BlueMeme Group), who shared the project’s goals, provided support for the rapid application development using their proprietary development methodology “AGILE-DX” This methodology utilizes a low-code platform, agile development, training support, and a development environment to facilitate quick and efficient application development.

As the Miyata Laboratory specializes in research on data analysis using AI, none of the project members had experience in developing full-scale applications. Initially, the plan was to develop the application from scratch in about 5 months with a team of 7 to 8 members. However, the project faced challenges unique to the university context, such as the graduation of core development members and parallel development with other research projects. To address these problems, the BlueMeme Group proposed “AGILE-DX” and launched a development project based on it.

By applying “AGILE-DX”, the team was able to develop the application with only three project members in a short timeframe of three months, from design to release. Compared to the original plan, the overall project man-hours were reduced by approximately 70%, enabling the application development to be carried out in parallel with other projects. The project team aims to continue providing ongoing support, taking advantage of the characteristics of agile development to meet the detailed needs of the field.

BlueMeme Group has been working with local governments and companies in Okinawa Prefecture and was recently commissioned by Urasoe City to develop a Regional DX Human Resource Development Course. BlueMeme Group also joined the Information Industry Association of Okinawa (IIA) to help revitalize the IT industry and train personnel in the prefecture. In 2023, BlueMeme Group plans to expand its Okinawa office and continue supporting the development of DX human resources and resolving social issues using the latest technology.
